Cory Hale hit his first home run in a Lipscomb uniform, but the Bisons dropped an 8-3 decision to Murray State Sunday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium.
The Bisons lost all three games in the season-opening series with Murray State, an Ohio Valley Conference team.

“We found out Murray State is a very, very good team,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “Give them a lot of credit. They out-hit us all weekend long. They got big hits when they needed to get them.”

Center fielder Tyler Wilson posted his second consecutive multi-hit game with three hits in five at bats for the Bisons. He also had one stolen base, giving him three in the last two games.

Sophomore right-hander Davey Hackett started on the mound for the Bisons. He last 4.2 innings, giving up three hits and five runs, all earned. He walked three batters and struck out five.

“Hackett pitched really well,” Forehand said. “They just continue to put pressure on you every inning. They are just a good offensive team. You have to give Murray State all of the credit.”

Right-hander Chad Fromm threw 4.1 innings for the Bisons. He scattered five hits and allowed three runs, all earned. He walked two and struck out three.

“Chad came in, and he was good as well,” Forehand said. “He gave us what we expected. He threw a lot of strikes. Hopefully, he can do a lot for us late in games.”

The Bisons out-hit Murray State 9 to 8.

Murray State opened with a run in the first inning. They added four in the four in the fifth and one each in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings. The Bisons had one run in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh.

“Murray State is as good an offensive team as we have seen,” Forehand said. “They would stack up with the best of the Atlantic Sun.

“We pitched well enough to win today. We just didn’t hit enough. Once we start getting a big hit every now and then they will start coming consistently.”

The Bisons, 0-3, head to Tulane this weekend.

“We will continue to do more of the same in terms of reps and practice,” Forehand said. “We have to prepare to play another good team. Hopefully, we get the big hit when we get runners on base.”
