=========================
The Lipscomb Bisons don't enjoy walking off the field with only a moral victory for their efforts.
But Tuesday night at Hawkins Field the pulled within one run of the Vanderbilt Commodores at 5-4 in the sixth inning, but lost 10-4 to the Southeastern Conference foe.
“The one focus we had coming into this game was that we wanted to compete,” Lipscomb coach Jeff Forehand said. “I feel like we did compete. We felt like we were in the game. We fought and competed.
“We haven’t gotten everything to click. We did Friday against Belmont. Now we are chasing that game again. We have to get the momentum turned.”
The Bisons played their fifth straight road game Wednesday at 6 p.m. when they travel to Clarksville to play Austin Peay. Left-hander Chris Nunn (0-1, 23.32 earned run average) will start for the Bisons. It will be his third start and fifth appearance.
Austin Peay lost to Indiana State 6-5 Wednesday. Austin Peay, an Ohio Valley Conference team, is 10-9.
The Bisons had seven hits, with no batter getting more than one. M.L. Williams did not get a hit in five at bats, ending his team-high hitting streak at 11 games.
Vanderbilt jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. They added two in the third and two in the sixth.
The Bisons scored one run in the fourth when Lee Wilson's double drove home Zach Messer who had reached base on a single. Both hits were after the Bisons had made two outs.
The Bisons struck for three more runs in the sixth to pull within one run of Vanderbilt at 5-4. All three runs were the result of doubles. Ryan Wilkins drove in one run with a double and Shawn Mehring drove in two runs with a double when he entered the game as a pinch-hitter.
However, the Commodores were not through offensively. They scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings and one in the eighth.
“We let them in the door a little bit,” Forehand said. “They had a couple of hits that dropped in front of us in right field. So we pulled in and the ball shoots over our head.
“When things aren’t going good for you then you don’t get that break. They were really working the right side. They got several hits through the four-hole and a couple of those blooped in. “
Forehand is waiting for the luck of the Bisons to change.
“Vanderbilt had 13 hits and some of them just fell in where we weren’t,” Forehand said. “Getting hits in those situations is a sign of a good team. Right now, our good fortune has not come yet. Hopefully, it is just around the corner.”
Right-hander Chad Fromm, the closer for the Bisons, made his first start of the season. He struggled to throw strikes. He was limited to 50 pitches, but he threw 53, 30 for strikes. He gave up one hit and one run, but walked two batters and hit two more. He struck out three.
“Chad still has to get in the zone more,” Forehand said. “He has to get more competitive in the zone earlier in the count and get ahead of pitchers a little bit more. He will. He is a good pitcher. We expect him to do that.”
Left-hander Alex Ross pitched 1.1 innings in relief. He allowed two hits and four runs, three earned. He walked three and struck out two. Righty Matt Bowling spent the longest time on the mound. In three innings he scattered six hits and allowed four runs, all earned. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. Right-hander Mike Grace closed out the game. In 1.2 innings he gave up one hit and one run. He also walked one batter.
“I thought Alex did a good job,” Forehand said. “I was really proud of Matt Bowling. He came in and was throwing hard. He was competing in the strike zone.”
The Bisons are back home this weekend for a three-game Atlantic Sun series with East Tennessee State.
