DELAND, FLA. – The Lipscomb Bisons offense struggled Saturday afternoon against the Stetson pitching staff in a 4-3 loss at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.
The Bisons collected eight hits while not walking. Lipscomb did not struggle at making contact though. The Bisons made 17 of their outs on fly balls, including one stretch of nine consecutive.
Lipscomb entered the fifth inning with just one hit before freshman shortstop TJ Hoelzer and junior catch Matt Brewer had back-to-back doubles. Senior center fielder Tyler Wilson drove the pair home on a single through the right side giving the Bisons a 2-1 lead.
Stetson tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning after they led off with three straight hits. The Bisons got out of the inning after having runners on first and second with only one out when poor base running by the Hatters led to a double play.
Hoelzer misplayed a grounder but kept the ball in front of him. Sean Emory advanced to third and continued towards home thinking the ball went into the outfield. Hoelzer got Emory into a run down and Brewer applied the tag for the out. While the rundown was going on, Jeff Simpson began towards third from second. He retreated, but not quick enough as the Bisons got Simpson in a run down after making the initial out was made. Simpson was unable to get out of the run down and the Bisons made the successful third out of the inning.
Mike Jones hit a home run over the left field fence to give Stetson the 3-2 lead in the 6th inning. The Hatters added a run in the 7th to take the two-run lead.
The Bisons made things interesting in the top of the 9th. With one out, Ryan Wilkins got things started with a single to left field. Andrew Nickerson reached on a fielder’s choice as Wilkins was put out at second. Hoelzer then reached on a throwing error by Stetson’s second baseman. Brewer was lifted for pitch hitter Shawn Mehring who singled up the middle driving in a run bringing the Bisons within one, 4-3. M.L. Williams flew out to left field to end the game.
Lindsey Caughel (4-3) pitched seven strong innings for the win. He gave up five hits and two runs, both earned. He struck out seven. Robbie Powell recorded the final five outs of the game for his fifth save of the season.
Davey Hackett (3-4) received the loss for Lipscomb. He threw six innings giving up six hits and four runs. Chad Fromm pitched the last two innings for Lipscomb giving up two hits.
The two teams meet Sunday at 10 a.m. in the series finale.
