NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Managing only four hits on the afternoon, the Lipscomb baseball team dropped a 4-0 rubber game decision to visiting Kent State on Sunday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville.

The contest closely resembled Friday’s 2-1 win by the Bisons (4-3) through the first six innings as neither team could dent the armor of Lipscomb’s Josh Cothom (0-1) or Kent State’s Tyler Skulina (2-0), who each took started.

“We corrected a few things that went wrong yesterday,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “We played solid defense today, we just couldn’t get the bats going. With four hits and no runs, it’s hard to win a game.

“Our offense is going to get going and that will make everything a little bit easier.”

Cothem kept the Golden Flashes (4-2) at bay until the seventh inning when a pair of wild pitches proved costly for the Bisons. KSU’s Sawyer Polen fanned to start the frame but the pitch was in the dirt and kicked out to nearly the home on-deck circle and allowed Polen to reach. A sac bunt then moved the third baseman into scoring position and a wild pitch advanced him 90 feet before an RBI single by centerfielder Evan Campbell gave Kent State their first lead of the afternoon.

After threatening in the eighth, the Golden Flashes got a rally going with a leadoff walk and a single to left to put two aboard before a sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Catcher David Lyon then hit a sinking line drive to left that allowed both runners to score as Lyon pulled into second. Another Lipscomb wild pitch moved Lyon up to third and then an infield single by first baseman George Roberts plated Lyon and rounded out the scoring.

Despite a solid performance overall, Cotham took the loss on the hill going six and two-thirds innings allowing seven hits and one earned run while walking two and fanning seven. Skulina picked up his second win in as many outings throwing seven innings of shutout ball for Kent State. The righty allowed only two hits and a pair of walks while notching six strikeouts.

Skulina along with teammates Michael Clark and Casey Wilson, stymied the Bison offense as no Lipscomb batter had more than one hit and the bottom of the order went a combined 0-for-8 with a walk.

The Bisons hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday with a trip to Cookeville to take on Tennessee Tech at 3 p.m. at Bush Stadium at Averitt Express Baseball Complex.
