NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Punching across 11 runs in the first three innings of play, the Lipscomb baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of visiting Siena with a 13-5 victory on Sunday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen L. Marsh Stadium in Nashville.
After taking both games of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against the Saints (1-13), the Bisons (7-10) wasted little time getting things going on Sunday plating six runs in the bottom of the first behind good patience at the plate and timely hitting. Leadoff hitter Lee Wilson drew a walk to start the inning before junior centerfielder Zach Lowery and senior designated hitter M.L. Williams did the same to load the bases right out of the gate. That set the table for senior second baseman Zak Messer, who delivered a single to right that allowed Wilson to score easily from third.
Freshman first baseman Griffin Moore then drew a walk to bring Lowery home to make it a 2-0 contest before Williams made it a three-run lead on a wild pitch that moved the runners up 90 feet. Junior shortstop Aaron Sandoval then made it a 5-0 game with a single to left that brought home Messer and Moore and would later cross the plate in the frame behind a single from junior left fielder Ricky Williams and a Siena error.
“This is exactly what we wanted,” said Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand. “We swung the bats and we put some runs up. It’s always good for a team to get the bats going and get hot like that. Hopefully, we can carry that into next weekend.”
The Saints answered right back in the top of the third off of junior starter Josh Cotham behind a pair of singles and a walk to score three runs in the second.
Lipscomb would then blow the game open in the bottom of the third behind a five-run stanza to make it 11-3. Junior catcher Taylor Stewart started the inning by drawing a walk before a Saint's error would give Lipscomb two aboard with no outs for Wilson, who singled to left to load the bases. Lowery then delivered a sacrifice fly to centerfield allowing Stewart to score. Wilson and Coleman then came across the dish on a 2-RBI single to the outfield as the senior drove in two of his three runs on the day after a 6-RBI day on Saturday.
A double by Moore then allowed Messer to score to make it a 10-3 game before Moore scored himself on another Siena error to push the lead to 11-3 for the Bisons.
A two-out rally started by a Moore walk in the fifth would lead to another run for the Bisons. After drawing the walk, Moore moved up to second on a Sandoval single, advanced to third when freshman third baseman Tyson Ashcraft reached on a dropped third strike and then scored on an infield single by Stewart.
A leadoff triple by Wilson in the sixth led the final run of the afternoon for Lipscomb. The ball hit to the right-center gap set Wilson up to score later in the inning on a wild pitch by the Saints.
The Saints would add lone runs in the eighth and ninth innings but it would be too little too late for the visitors.
Cotham picked up his first win of 2012 going six innings and giving up two earned runs and six hits. The veteran walked three and struck out seven Saints. Lipscomb also got an inning of work out of Chris Nunn, J Hwang, making his first appearance as a Bisons and Erik Natusch.
“I think it was vital that we play well this weekend going into next weekend,” said Forehand. “Every time you play in conference, it’s a very solid team every weekend. It doesn’t matter who it is. Upstate is playing great right now and has a great record but it’s really good for us to come out this weekend and get three wins. “
The Bisons hit the road next weekend for a three-game series at USC Upstate to open Atlantic Sun play.
